Former USC, Raiders QB Todd Marinovich arrested again

Former USC and Raiders quarterback Todd Marinovich was arrested in California twice last week on undisclosed charges and remains in jail, The Desert Sun reported Sunday.

Marinovich was arrested March 19 and released after posting bail. He was arrested again on March 23 and is still in custody. According to jail records, the former quarterback is expected to be released May 3. No further details have been released on why he was arrested.

Archie Bradley pitched around Kolten Wong’s leadoff single in the eighth, and Brad Boxberger finished for his fourth save in as many chances, retiring Jose Martinez on a game-ending, double-play grounder

“Every time you hit a home run it feels good,” Peralta said. “It was a situation where you have to take advantage of a mistake.”

St. Louis starter Luke Weaver allowed one run and three hits in 6 1/3 innings with seven strikeouts, leaving with a 1-0 lead created by Wong’s RBI single in the fifth.

Nick Ahmed hit a tying RBI single off Matt Bowman in the seventh.

Chris Owings singled off Leone (0-2) starting the eighth and Peralta hit his second home run this season. Pollock followed two batters later with his first.

Cousins later signed with the Vikings for roughly $86 million, a price out of range for general manager John Elway, who reportedly didn’t want to spend too much in what he believed to be a somewhat deep quarterback market.

“We got our guy. The guy that was our target,” Elway said of Keenum Friday.

The 30-year-old Keenum will look to help steer the Broncos to a bounce-back season after they went 5-11 in 2017.

Trevor Siemian, Brock Osweiler and Paxton Lynch all started games for the Broncos, the latter pair failing to win in any of their appearances in a miserable first year for head coach Vance Joseph.

Keenum, who has also had unsuccessful stints with the Texans and Rams, went 11-3 in the regular season as a starter for the Vikings, throwing for 3,547 yards and 22 touchdowns with just seven interceptions.

The Knicks remained without injured starters Tim Hardaway Jr. and Enes Kanter.

Cleveland creates Joe Thomas Day to be celebrated 7/3

Joe Thomas has an official day in his honor.

Cleveland announced that July 3, or 7/3, will be known as Joe Thomas Day. The 7/3 honors his No. 73 jersey, which he wore throughout his 11-year career with the Browns.

Thomas, 33, announced his retirement from the NFL on March 14. He took to Twitter to ask that the city make the holiday mandatory, so everyone can take the day off.

This should be an ‘all-Midwest’ holiday. Anywhere you; eat brats for special occasions, go to fish frys on Fridays, drink bloody Mary’s on Sundays, opening day is a holiday, and drink beer on anyday ending in Y.

Brown thought rookie Markelle Fultz was just OK after getting nearly all the backup minutes at point guard ahead of T.J. McConnell. Brown said he hasn’t decided if Fultz will be part of the postseason rotation.

That remains a little bit of a mystery to us, Brown said. And it should. He hasn’t played, as we all know, much NBA basketball.

The Mavericks ensured they will stay below Orlando and keep the fourth-worst record in the NBA. Only Atlanta, Memphis and Phoenix have poorer records.

You’re taught from a young age, the low man wins. Get your head lower than theirs. It’s like the nature of the game, DeCastro told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

I just can’t wait until the referees come into training camp like they do every year, and they show us the videos of what to do and not do in the rule changes. I just can’t wait to see it because I have no idea what they’re talking about. It doesn’t make any sense to me.

The new rule was approved unanimously by league owners in Orlando, Fla., last month in hopes of improving player safety, but for DeCastro and many other players who have been vocal about the change, it takes away from the contact that has always been a part of football.

We’re going to look like sumo wrestlers, DeCastro said. Put our bellies against each other.

They got a huge lift on Monday from Bledsoe, with help from Muhammad and Jason Terry off the bench. They helped push the Bucks on the 20-6 run over the final 5:27 of the third to build a 74-67 lead.

Bruce Irvin slams former Raiders coach Rod Woodson for Derek Carr criticism

Nationals: 2B Howie Kendrick left after the seventh inning because his right leg tightened up on him, Martinez said. … C Matt Wieters (strained oblique muscle) will go to Class A Potomac on a rehab assignment Tuesday.

The Nationals send RHP Stephen Strasburg (1-0, 3.65 ERA) to the mound against Braces RHP Mike Foltynewicz (1-0, 2.61).

Owner Robert Kraft on Thursday offered the use of the team plane after former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona, herself a shooting victim in an assassination attempt, and her husband, astronaut Mark Kelly, reached out to him and asked for the favor, a Patriots spokesman told the Boston Globe.

Kelly told The Washington Post that he and his wife, who are vocal gun-control advocates, wanted to help the students get to the march.

Not only did their friends and teachers get shot and killed, other friends shot and injured … most of them they had bullets flying over their heads, he said. This is not fair that they have to deal with something like this at their age. They wanted to go to Washington and be heard, and so I felt it was our obligation to help them.

The Patriots weren’t the only organization to reach out to the group from a school where 17 were shot to death last month.

McNair added that he was actually referring to league executives with the inmates comments and not NFL players. He also believes he should not have been pressured to apologize.

In business, it’s a common expression. But the general public doesn’t understand it, perhaps, McNair told the WSJ.

The apology McNair issued in October said he never meant to offend anyone.

Former Texans running back Arian Foster, who spent seven of his eight NFL seasons in Houston, invited McNair to speak on his podcast to have a civil discourse about all in response to McNair’s latest remarks. Foster added that he thought everyone could benefit from it.

I don’t think it’s mechanical, he said. I left a lot of pitches over the plate, missing a lot on top of the plate. I’ve got to get the pitch down in the strike zone. They took good advantage.

Lamar Jackson will visit Ravens

The Ravens signed Robert Griffin III on Thursday, and they have another quarterback scheduled to visit.

Baltimore will host Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson for one of the Ravens’ 30 national visits, Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated reports.

Keenum may very well have turned the corner in his journeyman career after last year’s unexpected success in Minnesota. He was far better in every major statistical category — completion percentage (67.6), touchdowns (22), interceptions (seven), passing yards (236.5 per game) and quarterback rating (98.3) — than in six previous seasons when starting for Houston and the Rams.

More importantly, Keenum won games. He enjoyed an 11-3 starting record and led the Vikings into the postseason after replacing an injured Sam Bradford. His previous career mark was 9-15.

“Everybody wanted to know, ‘Why were we winning? What was clicking for us?’” Keenum said. “It’s a lot of things.

“I think, at the heart of it, it’s the people. We had great people in our locker room. We had great people on the coaching staff. And it just clicked.”

The Dolphins swear they’re committed to starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill, but they’re doing all their homework on this year’s draft class.

So there isn’t room for everyone.

According to Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald, the Dolphins are releasing quarterback Brandon Doughty.

Lue credited James — who came into Monday averaging a triple-double in his previous 28 games by putting up 30.3 points on 54.5 percent shooting, 10.1 rebounds and 10.2 assists — for keeping the Cavs on track.

Strunk didn’t get control when she got a third of the team. No one did. It appears that Strunk struck a deal with Lewis and her sons to exercise control for as long as Strunk wants, with an understanding that control will eventually be handed to Kenneth IV.

If the league thinks that’s fine, the league should say it’s fine. The league hasn’t said it’s fine. Which suggests that the league doesn’t think it’s fine, but that the league isn’t interested in a fight over it, for now.

Nick Nelson injured during private workout with Lions

As initially reported by NFL Media, Wisconsin cornerback Nick Nelson injured his knee during a private workout. PFT has learned that the team for which he was working out was the Lions.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the injury happened within the first five minutes of the workout.

It could have happened with any team; the fact that it was the Lions is immaterial. The bigger question is whether players should continue to agree to submit to private workouts.

Gaine and O’Brien have witnessed Watt’s ups and downs up close over the past four seasons (with Gaine having gone to Buffalo for just one of those years). They know Watt was an outstanding player at his peak, and they know what a terrific story it will be if such a great guy in the community becomes the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year.

I’m not counting Watt out, but realistically, it’s hard to see him being that 20-sack guy again. Gaine and O’Brien likely have the same fear.

While they’re hoping for the best, they will be pleasantly surprised if it happens. And if not, it sets in motion a series of events that could be painful to endure for this popular player, his team and the Texans fan base.

The 6-foot-5, 282-pound Bridgewater is an extreme long shot to be drafted, but he’s hoping he can catch on as an undrafted free agent and follow in the footsteps of Chargers tight end Antonio Gates and Chiefs tight end Demetrius Harris, both of whom played basketball only in college. Bridgewater was recruited by several top football programs coming out of high school, but an injury limited him to just one football game in his senior year and he decided to focus exclusively on basketball.

It wouldn’t be surprising to see Bridgewater put on the shoulder pads in an NFL camp, for the first time since high school.

NFL college personnel directors say this a lot: It’s easier for a mobile QB of Jackson’s ilk to land with a head coach who’s not hands-on offensively.

The Steelers with Tomlin would qualify, and so would the Bills with Sean McDermott, Tomlin’s former college defensive teammate at William & Mary. Like McDermott, the Cardinals’ Steve Wilks was the Panthers’ defensive coordinator and saw what Cam Newton was able to provide Carolina.

Cardinals double down on QBs off waivers with Brandon Doughty

Alek Torgersen isn’t the only new quarterback for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals claimed Torgersen off of waivers on Thursday and, per multiple reports, they also claimed Brandon Doughty. Doughty was waived by the Dolphins on Wednesday.

This year, one or more teams will be passing on the likes of Saquon Barkley, Bradley Chubb, and Minkah Fitzpatrick for a quarterback who quite possibly will fail. Or maybe they’ll simply take the wrong quarterback, like the Browns did in 1999 by taking Couch over McNabb. (Then again, maybe McNabb would have been Couch under Chirs Palmer and his successors in Cleveland, and Couch would have been McNabb under Andy Reid in Philly.)

Regardless, as the hype builds for the 2018 draft, it’s important to remember that we don’t know — and won’t know — which of the quarterbacks expected to be picked in round one will be worth a damn until enough time passes to allow their skills, abilities, weaknesses, and achievements to be fully evaluated. For those teams who take quarterbacks at the top of the draft and fail, the good news is that they’ll soon be in position to try it again.

Starting with those earliest picks and weighing other options like trades into other spots on the board, we break down how things might play out for the Bills come April 26.

Mike Martz: The 66-year-old already has spent the past four Januaries as one of the head coaches in the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl. It wouldn’t be a stretch for the “Greatest Show on Turf” architect to join the Alliance and prove his offensive concepts are still viable in today’s game.

Rob Ryan: When Ryan was fired as Cowboys defensive coordinator after the 2012 season, he famously proclaimed he would be out of work for “five minutes” because he was “too damn good.” Ryan is now going on two years out of the NFL entirely following subsequent failed stints with the Saints and Bills. The swagger Ryan would bring should have appeal to a league that could use some colorful characters to pitch the product.

CC Sabathia, Gary Sanchez among Yankees to exit in loss to Orioles

Injuries and illnesses piled up for the New York Yankees during Friday night’s 7-3 loss to the Baltimore Orioles as four players were forced to leave early. Left-hander CC Sabathia was among them, exiting with right hip soreness.

An MRI came back clean, the veteran starter said, but the Yankees placed him on the 10-day disabled list Saturday.

It was sore, and I’ve never felt that spot before — in ever, throwing a baseball — so it was a little nerve-wracking, Sabathia said.

The banged-up Yankees also lost catcher Gary Sanchez and infielders Brandon Drury and Tyler Wade during the game. Drury is joining Sabathia on the 10-day DL due to severe migraines.

Asked after the game how he felt, Wade simply said, Not good.

Sanchez was removed in the 14th inning after clutching his right calf in between pitches. He and Boone said he was cramping, and that he’ll be evaluated further Saturday morning. By the point when he came out, Sanchez had caught more than 250 pitches from Yankees pitchers.

I just got to wait and see how I feel [Saturday], Sanchez said through a translator. It’s the first time it happened to me.

I felt good, but I put us in a tough spot, he said. There’s really no excuse for walking four guys in an inning. Sometimes, you don’t have a good feel for the strike zone. I felt good warming up, but when the inning started, I was behind the entire time.

Some speculated that St. Louis (4-6) rushed Holland into action. It signed him on March 29, just hours after opening its season with a 9-4 loss at the New York Mets and gave him a pair of games at Single-A Palm Beach of the Florida State League before calling him up earlier Monday.

Manager Mike Matheny admitted it was a tough spot for Holland, who led the National League with 41 saves last year for Colorado but said Holland would shrug it off quickly and be ready for the next one.

You don’t see many cases like this, Matheny said. I don’t think it was nerves as much as it was being amped up, wanting to introduce himself to us in a hurry. It was one of those days.

The case could be made that Holland might not have been thrust into a difficult situation had the Cardinals executed offensively after loading the bases with no outs in the ninth. But all they got was a one-out sacrifice fly from Dexter Fowler.

Rams cut cornerback Kayvon Webster

The way they’ve been adding cornerbacks this offseason, there was inevitably another shoe to fall.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Rams are releasing cornerback Kayvon Webster.

He became surplus to requirements after they traded for Marcus Peters and Aqib Talib and signed free agent Sam Shields.

Webster started 11 games for the Rams last season, after four years as a reserve with the Broncos.

Garinger said earlier Sunday that while the rest of the season will not continue, the organization will do everything in its power to field a team for 2018-19.

The community has rallied with support. At the arena, cards featuring phone numbers with 24-hour crisis lines were placed on tables in the lobby, as well as fact sheets on how to talk about tragedies with children. Crisis counselors and a half-dozen therapy dogs were stationed at the perimeter of the arena. Volunteers offered cans of sodas to attendees entering the arena. Card-making stations and boxes of tissue were placed around the building.

Of course, that doesn’t keep someone/anyone connected to the draft from trying to persuade one of its biggest stars to show up. And the players have every right to not show up, especially since they don’t receive an appearance fee or anything other than travel expenses and the ability to bring certain people along, a group that now includes their high-school head coaches.

At its core, the draft is a gathering centered around reading off a list of names. It loses a lot of its luster if the players whose names are read say, “We’re not showing up.” If enough of them did, all of them would eventually get fairly compensated to be part of the ultimate reality show’s ultimate reality show.

It’s definitely a precarious position for Gaine and O’Brien. If Watt doesn’t return to top form, they’re then dealing with a descending player. And deciding to cut ties with a player who has been the face of the franchise for seven years is one of the toughest moves a GM or coach ever has to make. I can empathize with them after doing this difficult task several times during my NFL management career.

I believe the Texans’ brass will keep Watt this season and give him an opportunity to return to top form. They’ll let it play out and then take stock of the situation. They’ll be well aware that his salary will jump in 2019, and the dead money then will be less of a factor.
